Mary Ellen Junkin

After a two weeks illness suffering with a partial paralysis of the throat succeeding failing health of three years' duration, Miss Ellen Mary Junkin entered into rest at the home of her sister, Mrs. E. B. Donaldson, on North Fourth Street, Wednesday morning, October 14, 1914, at 8 o'clock. She bore the suffering bravely and was prepared to meet her Master in the Eternal World. Miss Junkin was born in Thornville, Perry County, Ohio 82 years ago, and came to Steubenville with her parents, Matthew Oliver and Rebecca Buchanan Junkin, a very short time after. She was connected with the church for sixty years and was a most consistant church worker throughout her life. She joined the United Presbyterian Church here during the pastorate of her uncle, Rev. George Buchanan, and for thirty years was active in its various departments. In 1883 she became a member in the Second Presbyterian Church and since then was connected with that church and its successor, the Westminster. In the Second church she was still active in the work of the various societies and organizations. She was educated in the Steubenville Seminary under the regime of Dr. Beatty, attending that school for seven years, leaving in 1852. Her father, Matthew Junkin, died in 1882. He was prominent in local business and church circles, having been an elder in the U. P. Church. Her mother, Rebecca Buchanan Junkin, died five years later, in 1887. For the past 27 years, Miss Junkin made her home with her sister, Mrs. W. B. Donaldson. During her long residence in Steubenville she made a great host of friends who will miss her cheerful words, her genial way and kindly disposition.
