BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD

JOHN ALPHEUS HORINE, now living retired [1910] at Burkittsville, one of its oldest citizens, was in his active days a leading farmer of the district. He was born, September 20, 1824, at Myersville, Frederick County, son of Tobias and Magdalena (Routzahn) Horine.

The Horine family is of German origin. Its progenitor in this country settled near Middletown, in Frederick County. Tobias Horine [II], the paternal grandfather of John Alpheus, was a farmer, living near Myersville. He was married twice. His children were: 1, Tobias; 2, Susan (Mrs. Daniel Koogle); 3. John, who married Miss Routzahn; 4, Jacob, married Miss Dutrow; 5, Matilda (Mrs. Philip Shoemaker); 6, Malinda (Mrs. Daniel Mann); 7, Samuel, who married Miss Palmer.

Tobias Horine, 2nd [actually the 3rd], was born at the homestead near Myersville in 1800. His early days were spent as those of farmers' sons usually are; he learned farming practically, and later became the owner of part of his father's land, on which he conducted a saw-mill and grist-mill. In the spring of the year 1836, he removed with his family to the farm now occupied by Baxter Horine, in Burkittsville District, on the road to Jefferson. Finally, just before the Civil War, Mr. Horine removed to Burkittsville. He had owned several slaves. He died in 1880, and was buried in the Burkittsville Cemetery. He was all his life a member of the Lutheran Church, in which he was chosen to serve as an elder. His political tenets were originally those of the Whig party; when party names changed, he became a Republican.

Tobias Horine [III], was married to Magdalena daughter of Ludwig Routzahn; she also died in Burkittsville. Their children are: 1, Joel, deceased; married Miss Catherine Koontz; 2, John Alpheus; 3, Joshua, who died at the age of fifteen years; 4, Luther, deceased; married Miss Scheffer; 5, Ezra, who was born in 1832, and married Miss Ann Eliza Hanes, now lives retired in Burkittsville; he is the father of Martin Luther Horine, and of 1. Florence (Mrs. John Maught); 2, Martha E. (Mrs. W. Scott Kefauver); 4, Stephen E. F.; 5, Baxter F., on the old homestead; 6, Melancthon, retired; lives in Burkittsville, married Miss Emma Garver; 7. Mary Ann (Mrs. Josephus Karn); her husband is deceased; 8, Sarah (Mrs. George Easterday).

John Alpheus Horine, the second of this large family, was educated in an old-fashioned "pay school". He learned the business of his life while assisting in the culture of his father's farm, and continued in the same employment until his retirement, in 1885. Mr. Horine was married at Broad Run, Frederick County, in 1851, to Frances, daughter of George W. and Elizabeth(Biser) Grove. Their children are: 1, Effie (Mrs. Charles Mainhard), of Montgomery County, Md.; 2, John V., at home; 3, Amos; 4, Emma; 5, Dr. A. G. of Brunswick, Md. The mother, Mrs. John A. Horine, died in 1887; she was a member of Reformed Church in Burkittsville.

Mr. John A. Horine joined the Lutheran Church in his youth, and has always been a faithful and active member; for many years he has held office, first as a deacon, and later as elder. Before the Civil War, he was a Whig, but afterwards became an adherent of the Democratic party.
