J9 William Preston Lane, was born November 30, 1851 in Middletown Valley, Frederick County, Maryland. He married (1) Minnie Stanhope, daughter of Lewis G. Stanhope. He married (2) Virginia Lee Cartwright. Six children.

William P. Lane was educated at the Cumberland Valley Institute, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1872 from Princeton University. He was a star in football at Princeton including the first intercollegiate game in 1869.

After Princeton, William P. Lane he studied law in Hagerstown with his brother in law, H. H. Keedy. He was admitted to the Bar in 1874. He became secretary of the Hagerstown Steam Engine Co. in 1880. Appointed postmaster at Hagerstown by President Cleveland. William P. became a member of the Hagerstown Light Infantry under Captain Douglas (Later a General). He was on hand to celebrate Cornwallis surrender on the 100th anniverary of this event. He was elected Captain and later became a Lt. Colonel in the First Maryland National Guard, composed of military companies outside of Baltimore. He was commissioned a Colonel of this regiment on June 19, 1896. During the Spanish-American war he was mustered in to the U. S. Volunteers at Pimlico, near Baltimore, He resigned his state commission and was appointed a Lt. Colonel in the Volunteers. He served at Ft Monroe from June 1898 until the following September, when he was assigned to the First Brigade, First Division, 2nd Army at Camp Meade, Pennsylvania. He was mustered out of service on February 28, 1899, at Camp McKenzie, Ga.

He was a member of Friendship Lodge, No 84, A. F. and A. M., and was past master of Ithiel Chapter, R. A. M., of Hagerstown; of St, Bernard Commandery No 9, Knights Templar, of which cammandery is captain-general; of Boumi Temple of the Mystic Schrine, of Baltimore; of the Mystic Circle; and the Masonic Temple Association of Hagerstown. He was a trustee of the Washington County Hospital and a memeber St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a democrat.

    K4 Charles Seth Lane III, born December 17, 1894. Married Susan Gambrill at Frederick in 1924. He directed the Dietrich and Gambrill Company of Frederick (1928-1951).
