Obituary of Joseph Newton Horine

Joseph Newton Horine, son of the late George T. and Eliza Horine, was born near Castine, Ohio, December 18, 1959, and died upon his own farm, within one mile of his birth-place, November 29, 1906, aged 46 years, 11 months, and 12 days.

He was one of five brothers, the next older than he having died in infancy, thus leaving him to be the next oldest living of the four.

On February 19, 1885, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Hemp of Piqua, Ohio: to this union there were born six children, two girls and four boys, the oldest of whom died in infancy. The names of those who survive are Eva, Harrison, Alva, Charley and Roy.

In January of 1903, he, with his four sons, accepted Christ and united with the United Brethren church at Castine, under the labors of the Rev. G. W. Hamilton, and was not only faithful to every duty bestowed upon him by the church, but was devoted to his Master's work, and not only was he sincere in his devotions, one recognized as having ability to hold office. He was at the time of his death a trustee of the church, and teacher of the senior men's class of the Sunday school.

He was always known as an honorable, upright, industrious, and conscientious citizen; a loving and devoted husband; a kind and indulgent father. He was an honored member of the K. of P. Lodge, having held and passed the local lodge bestows.

He leaves to mourn his loss, a loving and devoted wife, one daughter, four sons, and three brothers-Jacob W., of Three Oaks, Mich.; Wm. C., of New Madison, Ohio; and John W., of Eaton, Ohio. The community also mourns the loss of one of its best citizens, the church and the lodge one of its most useful and devoted members, and the Sunday school a good teacher. but we mourn not as those who have no hope; he has passed from out sight to the reals of a higher life; he has passed from the fellowship of earthly citizens to associate with Christ, the angels of God, and the spirits of just men made perfect. We say farewell now, but we shall clasp glad hands in the morning of eternal day.

"We shall sleep, but not for ever,
There will be a glorious dawn,
We shall meet to part no never
On the resurrection morn."

His severe affliction was of but brief duration, lasting only nine days; the physicians term the disease as multiple neuritis, acute one which rarely proves anything else than fatal.
