I1 Henry W. Summers, was born September 09, 1826 in Frederick County, Maryland, and died April 02, 1902 in Frederick County, Maryland. He married Esther Catharine Derr December 11, 1848, daughter of Philip Derr and Elizabeth Crone. Eleven children.

HENRY W. SUMMERS, son of George W. and Catherine E. (Micheal) Summers, was born October 9, 1826, and died April 3, 1902. He received such an education as the public schools afforded; and followed the vocation of a farmer.

In 1849, he began farming on his own account on a farm given him by his father. This place lay about two miles and a-half southeast of Middletown, in Middletown district. He made his home here until 1868, when he bought a large farm of 304 acres, known as the Mount Philip farm from George William Smith. This tract was situated about four miles south west of Frederick, on the road leading from Hagerstown pike to the Mount Philip school house. Here Mr. Summers remained until 1888, when he relinquished the management of the farm to two of his sons. He improved this large farm in such a way that it could be divided into three tracts, which division was afterwards made.

Mr. Summers amassed a competency by industry, perseverance and strict honesty in his business transactions. He was a stockholder in the Valley Savings Bank of Middletown and in the Frederick and Middletown Electric Railroad.

Mr. Summers was married to Esther C. Derr, daughter of Philip and Elizabeth (Crone) Derr, of Middletown Valley. They were the parents of fourteen children, nine of whom grew to maturity: Philip W.; William H.; Elizabeth, deceased, was the wife of John W. Bussard, of Middletown Valley; Louis E., of Jefferson district; Clare married to James Boyer, of Middletown district, deceased; Simon P., deceased; Mary A. S., the wife of Cornelius McDevitt, of Frederick district; and Cordelia F., the wife of Henry Roberts, of Braddock district.

Mr. And Mrs. Summers were members of the Lutheran Church of Middletown until after their removal to the Mount Philip farm, when they became affiliated with the Mount Zion Church. In the latter congregation, Mr. Summers served as an elder. They are both buried in the Lutheran cemetery at Middletown.
