J1 Philip Washington Summers, was born December 10, 1849 in Middletown Valley, Frederick County, Maryland, and died November 26, 1903 near Frederick City, Maryland. He married Margaret A. M. Zimmerman May 11, 1876, daughter of Joshua Zimmerman and Susan Beard. Eleven children.


PHILIP W. SUMMERS, deceased, was a well-known and highly esteemed citizen of Braddock District, where he was engaged in agriculture. He was born December 10, 1849, in Middletown Valley, Frederick County, and died November 26, 1903, on his farm near Frederick City. He was a son of Henry W. and Esther C. (Derr) Summers.

Philip W. Summers, son of Henry W. and Esther C. (Derr) Summers, was educated in the public schools, and followed agricultural pursuits up to the time of his death. He was reared on the paternal estate, where he made his home until after his marriage. He then embarked in business for himself by opening a cheese factory in Frederick. This business he conducted for one year, when he sold out and returned to the country, taking up his residence with his father-in-law, with whom he remained a number of years.

Mr. Summers then cultivated the Dr. J. J. Culler farm near Jefferson, for three years. He next located on a part of the Mount Philip farm of his father, where he was living when the elder Summers died. Mr. Summers then purchased one of the divisions of this tract, consisting of 131 acres of excellent agricultural land. This place adjoins the farm of Mrs. C. W. Ross, on the Mount Zion road, about four miles southwest of Frederick City.

He was a practical and progressive farmer and raised large crops. After his death, his widow. with the aid of her sons, managed the farm very successfully until the spring of 1909, when she retired. She took up her residence in Frederick City, purchasing a fine home in West Patrick street extended.

Mr. Summers was married to Margaret A. M. Zimmerman, daughter of Joshua J. and Susan M. (Beard) Zimmerman, of Carroll Manor. Her father, who is dead, was a prominent agriculturist. Philip W. and Margaret A. M. Summers were the parents of eleven children, the first named being twins: Margaret C., the wife of Jonathan Main, of Frederick district; Catharine M., married to William Ropp, of Middletown district; Joshua H., of Braddock district; George W. S., of Braddock district; Henry W., of Middletown; Annie P. A., the wife of Luther A. Stang, of Montgomery County, Md.; Samuel P. D., of Frederick district; Cordelia F., the wife of Henry C. E. Krantz, of Braddock district; J. J. Thomas, of Frederick district; Emma E. and Charlotte S. R., both reside at home.

Mr. and Mrs. Summers were members of the Lutheran Church at Mount Zion for a number of years, in which he held the office of deacon and was very active. In later years, however, they were prominent and influential members of the United Brethren Church of Frederick City.

    K11 Charlotte Susan R. Summers, born March 24, 1895 in Frederick County, Maryland; died November 15, 1975 in Frederick County, Maryland. She married Howard U. Quinn June 06, 1912.
