E8 William Francis Junkin, Junkin was born December 26, 1870 in New Providence, Virginia, and died 1947 in Tazewell, Virginia. He married Nettie Lambeth DuBose, daughter of pioneer missionaries Dr. and Mrs. Hampton C. DuBose April 3, 1900 in Soochow, China. She was born April 28, 1878 in Shanghai, China and died November 2, 1957 in Tazewell, Virginia.

Dr. Junkin graduated from Austin College and completed Seminary training at Louisville Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was truly a dedicated missionary who went to China in 1896 and worked there tirelessly for over 40 years. Respected by the Chinese and fearless for his own safety, he is credited with saving Sutsien from destruction by one of China's war lords. The helpless city was being shelled at midnight by a bloodthirsty war lord. Followed by a small group of Christian friends, Dr. Junkin went through the gates and found the war lord down by the banks of the Grand Canal. Kneeling in the darkness, Chinese-style, at risk of his own life, he pleaded for his native city. The war lord called off the bombs and the city was spared.

Pearl Harbor Day, 1941 found Dr. Junkin 80 miles from home and an internee of the Japanese on Gripsholm. In 1947 Dr. and Mrs. Junkin retired to Tazewell, Virginia where both are buried.
