Charlie worked as a breakman and was later promoted to conductor for the Big 4 Railroad, which was Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad Lines. In 1903 it was owned by the Vanderbilts. He traveled from Indianapolis to Bellefontaine, Ohio. (As told by his daughter Ellen.)
