"JOSHUA SUMMERS, a well-known, retired farmer of Myersville, Frederick County, Md., son of the late George W. and Catherine R.( Michael) Summers, (both deceased), was born on the old Summers homestead, near Harmony, Md., May 24, 1845.

Joshua Summers received his education in the public schools of Jackson District. He remained on the homestead, working with his father, until the time of his marriage. After his marriage, Mr. Summers rented the home farm for two years. At the end of that time, Mr. Summers assumed the management of the Old Woollen Mill, at Beallsville, at Harmony, the property of his father, and carried on the business successfully for four years. He then took charge of his father's flouring mill, known as the Oakland Mill, which he managed successfully for six years. Mr. Summers next engaged in farming, renting from his father, the Old Kenney place near Harmony, and two years later bought the property from his father. On this farm of 180 acres of fine land, situated three-quarters of a mile from Harmony, Mr. Summers remained for twenty-four years, when he retired from farming and removed to Myersville, where he owns a beautiful residence at the southern end of the village. Some time after he bought his first farm, Mr. Summers and his brother, David, purchased the Old Horine farm containing 300 acres of excellent land, but not long after, he sold his part to his brother, (David) and bought the G. L. Miller farm of 147 acres. This place he sold to his son, Milton V. and bought the Doub farm of 102 acres, situated in Middletown District. After making improvements on this place, Mr. Summers sold it to his son-in-law, Sumner Keller. He next purchased the Moor Routzahn farm of 119 acres, situated in Middletown District, two and a half miles north of Middletown. Mr. Summers is an intelligent, progressive farmer and has improved the land that has passed through his hands. His success is due to hard work and careful attention to business. He is well-known and highly respected by his fellow citizens, and is a stockholder in the Valley Savings Bank, at Middletown, Md.

Joshua Summers was married to Mary E., daughter of Elder George and Rebecca (Johnson) Leatherman, both deceased. Mrs. Summers' father, (who died at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 25 days) was for many years as elder in the German Baptist Church, and was highly respected in the community.
