John H. Miller was born either 2 or 9 February 1786, and in the St. John's Lutheran Church records (Littlestown) he was christened "Johannes."

He served in the War of 1812.

He was licensed to sell "foreign" merchandise in 1824, and was "quite successful financially ... he became a wealthy man." John hauled produce from his farm and neighbors' farms to Baltimore for sale, and returned with wagon loads of goods for sale (this was the 'foreign' merchandise-things from Baltimore retailers). He was called a "huckster" before that had a pejorative meaning. He and his sons also ran a general store. He owned 545,acms in Mount Pleasant Township, and was the founder of Salem United Brethern (now United Methodist) Church.

John and wife Sarah deeded land to the School Directors of Mount Pleasant Twp. in 1831.

Elizabeth Slick was a widow from Carroll County, MD. Nothing is known of her first husband, Hill. She is mentioned in John H. Miller's will as "my beloved wife Elizabeth."

Eight children:
