Velma Jane Lavy
Velma Jane Lavy was born Nov. 4, 1921, in Darke County, Ohio, to the (late) Joseph and Flossie (Stoner) Lavy, the second of three children and departed this life at the Brethren Retirement Community Dec. 26, 2006, at the age of 85.

She was baptized into the Old Order German Baptist Church early in life and remained faithful until she was called to her eternal home. She spent several years giving home health care to many people and 41 1/2 years as a nurses aide at Wayne Hospital where she was greatly appreciated.

She also gave much assistance to her parents as they grew older. After her father died in 1974, she took her mother into her own home and cared for her through sickness until she died in 1985. She enjoyed crocheting, making noodles, cakes and candy.

Preceding her in death were her parents and niece, Marilyn Lavy Sturtevant, in 1985.

Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Victor John and Doris Lavy of Arcanum and Glen Albert and Cordinette Lavy of Litchfield, Ohio; niece, Geneva and Roy Yoder of Bradford; four nephews, Merrill and Connie Lavy of Arcanum, Donald and Janet Lavy of Pleasant Hill, Lowell and Rena Lavy of Versailles and Clifford Lavy of Calif.; 18 great-nieces and nephews; 23 great-great-nieces and nephews; and many cousins, relatives and friends.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Painter Creek Old Order German Baptist Church on Painter Creek-Arcanum Road with home brethren officiating. A prayer service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Stocker-Fraley Funeral Home, Bradford, and interment will be in Newcomer Cemetery, Arcanum.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. today. Please omit flowers as donations may be made to the Brethren Retirement Community or the State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice 1350 N. Broadway, Greenville, Ohio 45331.
