Obituary of James Thumwood Goff

THE DEATH GRIP
Which a Wagon Wheel Had on Farmer Special dispatch to the Enquirer

Zanesville, Ohio, June 24, [1893].-- J.T. Goff, living near Frazeysburg, and one of the best-known farmers in this section of the country, met death by drowning last night. He had been spending the day with his brother, near Trinway, leaving there about 8 o'clock yesterday morning.

A neighbor discovered his body hanging by his feet, which were fastened in the wheels of his cart, which was standing hub deep in Wakatomika Creek. It is supposed that he stopped his horse in the creek, and when he attempted to unrein it he stepped on the wheel, and the horse, eager to drink, jerked forward, which caused Mr. Goff to lose his balance. When he fell his feet caught in the spokes of the wheel, which prevented his attempt to recover himself. [don't try this at home folks!!].
