According to his granddaughter, Thomas Horine and his brother had been left a considerable amount of money by an uncle. His brother took care of his share, but Thomas spent and spent until his was all gone. The Horine's originated in Alsace, which is sometimes in Germany and sometimes in France. Thomas Horine spoke French, and Bertha, his granddaughter, said her father was born in France when asked for the 1920 Census. Charles died 19 JAN 1937, Anerly, Kent, England. Charles worked for forty years at the Crystal Palace, first as a cook, and later as a waiter. He was a runner at one time, winning cups in the 440 yard and half- mile runs. In 1894 they moved to Philadelphia, obviously following his brother William's family, but they returned to England after nine months. According to Lily in 1935, " We went out to America and returned in February. We found the heat very trying in the summer in Philadelphia, and then with the coming of Winter the weather became intensely cold. The climate did not suit my husband, myself, or the family, so we came back to Anerly. And here we have remained ever since."

6. William Henry Horine b. 19 JAN 1857, London, England, occupation Carpet Maker, m. 7 MAY 1877, in London, England, Jane Pettigrove Pettigrove, Jane, b. 17 FEB 1859, London, England, (daughter of James Brittenden Pettigrove Pettigrove and Isabella Pelham) d. 4 SEP 1942, Elkton, SD, buried: Egan, SD. William died 31 OCT 1904, Egan, SD, buried: Egan, SD. William Horine was in the British Navy for a couple of years as a young man. He and his family came to the United States in 1880, first going to Lancaster, Pa, and before 1890 to Philadelphia. The family was intending to go to Australia until only a couple days before they left for America. It is not known why they changed their plans. In Philadelphia the family had a cigar store. Thomas was also a carpet maker. When his daughter, Belle, married and moved to South Dakota in 1901 (or 1902) the family followed them out. William Horine was out of his element there and the family probably would have returned to Philadelphia had he not died of a heart attack. According to Jane Dunn, William Horine could speak French, evidence of the Horine's Alsace origins. Jane: Jane Pettigrove was one of 14 children and grew up in the family carnival. After her husband's death in 1904, she was destitute. The neighbors helped and she took in sewing and all the children worked to earn some money. She stayed in Egan until 1918, when she moved to Sioux Falls, SD, following her daughter Jane down. After he was old enough her son Tom took care of her. She spoke with a strong English accent, which was very unusual in South Dakota and delighted the friends of her grandchildren. A particularly colorful phrase described a breakfast of "'am, heggs, and honions."
