William A. McClanahan was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted as a private on August 9, 1862 at the age of 19 in Company E, 91st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He mustered into service on September 7, 1862, at Ironton, Ohio. He was described as being 5 feet 10 inches tall, blue eyes, light hair and was by occupation a farmer. He was mustered in by S. Beall for a term of 3 years. He received a bounty of $100 for signing up. He was appointed Corporal on August 22, 1862, reduced at his own request to private on February 6, 1863. He was reappointed Corporal on September 18, 1864.

William received an invalid pension for illnesses contracted during his Civil War service. In 1862 he was, "taken by Diarrhea and Typhoid Fever caused by the use of impure water, being compelled to use water from the river, and that he is now and has been suffering ever since his discharge from said service with general disability resulting from said diseases. William was in the hospital at Point Pleasant, [West] Virginia from September 7 to October 31, 1862, for a period of about seven weeks."

Serving with William in the 91st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company E were his cousins Private D3 James Agnew Baldridge (1834-1909), and First Lieutenant D4 Samuel P. Baldridge (1836- ).

William Anning McClanahan mustered out with his regiment on June 24, 1865 in Cumberland, Maryland by A.F. Kendall.

Death of W. A. McClanahan

W. A McClanahan, died at his home near North Liberty, last Friday night, of pneumonia, after an illness of two weeks. Deceased was 59 years of age and was one of the most prominent and highly respected citizens of Wayne township. The funeral services were held at the U. P. church, of which he was an Elder, Tuesday, and were largely attended.
