William Steele McClanahan, born January 26, 1836 in Adams County, Ohio, died June 15, 1888 in Homestead, Illinois, and is buried in Viola Cemetery, Viola, Illinois; married April 4, 1868 Jennie Porter , daughter of Enoch and Mary June Hunter Potter of Beaver, Pennsylvania and Wapello, Iowa. William graduated Monmouth College 1860, and Monmouth Seminary, 1865.
William Steele McClanahan was a veteran of the Civil War. He served as 2nd Lieutenant of Company F, 17th Regular Illinois, and as Captain of Company A, 138th Illinois Infantry Regiment (view Pension Information). He was the Pastor in the Viola, Illinois U.P. Church from 1871-1887.
